I was asked, “What is a Venture Crew?” Sorry I overlooked this very important point! Download factsheet.
Attached are two brochures that explain the basics of a crew and also paths to advancement. A crew is similar to a troop but is open to boys and girls age 14 to 20. You may remember an older version called Explorers. A crew has youth leadership in the form of a president, vice president, treasurer, etc. and adult leaders called advisors. A crew can decide to focus in one area of activity, but is limited only by commitment and imagination. One idea is to focus on emergency medical response and train to volunteer on the ambulance crew. We will take an interest survey at the first meeting to help with activity selection.
Crews are encouraged to attend district and council events (some are required for advancement) and are eligible for any of the BSA High Adventure Bases (we saw several female or co-ed crews at Philmont).
My drive to put this together is to provide our daughters with some of the same leadership, positions of responsibility, and high adventure activities that our sons benefit from through the scouting program, that our daughters may not be receiving elsewhere. Since there will be some crossover with adults (and maybe older scouts) from the troop, we may be able to have the same meeting nights and attend some of the same activities. Still sorting that out.
So please spread the word. I have two “yes” and one “maybe”; need at least three more in the “yes” column.
